LOCAL SPORT

The area boasts a surprising range of sporting facilities to cater for most needs and tastes. Several swimming pools are available along with sports centres and gymnasia.

If you are interested in football, rugby or cricket, the town fields it's own teams. Skegness Town Football Club, aka The Lilywhites on Burgh Road once boasted comedian Charlie Williams as their star player (he arrived direct from top-flight Doncaster, and actually earned more in Skeggy).  England World-Cup     goal-keeper Ray Clemence also comes from Skegness.

If the more active sports are not your cup of tea, the bowling greens on the foreshore hold a very busy programme of tournaments each year.

SPORTS HEADLINES:

60 in 06 For Stadium:

Skegness Stadium has finalised its fixture list for 2006 - and it sees an expanded season, covering 60 race meetings.

The season starts on Sunday, March 5, when the BRISCA F2s will headline. But the highlight of the season will be the national two-litre saloon World Championship final in December.

The UK Speed Weekend will be on July 8 and 9, and will feature BRISCA F1s and F2s, plus national two-litre saloons.

Despite causing £35,000 of damage to the circuit after their previous visit, trucks will also be racing, for a third year, in July.

Easter will be hectic, with Good Friday racing added to that of Bank Holiday Monday.

The next meeting at Skegness Stadium will be on Sunday, January 22, with the penultimate round of the Winternational Series.

Packing a punch with ‘Boxercise’

THE LATEST fitness craze to hit the area is bound to pack a punch. ‘Boxercise’ is one of the most effective forms of working out.

It combines both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and is being promoted in East Lindsey by the District Council.

‘Boxercise’ enhances sports specific senses, including hand-eye co-ordination, balance and timing. Classes are always fun, energetic and addictive.

If you want to take part, there are classes at Skegness Sports Centre (formerly the Earl of Scarbrough Sports Centre) on Thursday nights between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

Sessions cost £3, or you can save money by booking ten weeks for £25.
